A spare room, a minimalist lifestyle, or pricey décor are not necessary to create space for stillness. Intention is what it does require. You can create a space for relaxation and reconnecting whether you have a small apartment, a shared area, or just a peaceful corner. Creating a meditation nook that reflects your energy, supports your routine, and fits with your sustainable lifestyle is something I'll demonstrate in this post.

Feel the Emotion

Consider how you want to feel in this place before you style anything. Peaceful, rooted, motivated, secure? Let your answer guide your design choices, from color palette to materials to what you choose to include (or leave out).

Select Your Location

There are areas in even the smallest house that can be used for different purposes:

  • Your bedroom's comfy nook

  • The hallway corner

  • A place under a window

  • A portion of your outdoor space or balcony

Choose a spot where you can sit quietly, preferably with some natural light and little noise.

Add Texture and Softness

Your meditation space should be cozy and welcoming. Include items such as:

  • A cushion or plush rug to sit on

  • A lightweight shawl or throw

  • Poufs or floor pillows

  • Natural materials like linen, jute, or cotton

Textures help us stay grounded in the here and now. Make it earthy, sensory, and balanced.

Include Pieces that Help You Stay Present

These only need to be meaningful and personal, not elaborate or spiritual:

  • A little altar with objects that promote tranquility (crystal, candle, picture)

  • Essential oils, incense, or a diffuser

  • A pen and journal for reflections following meditation

  • A flower or plant to remind you to inhale and relax

Pick a few items that feel purposeful and grounded, not cluttered.

My 5-Step Meditation Practice

  1. Light a single scented candle

  2. Play soothing, ambient or nature music

  3. Sit on my mat and breathe for 10 minutes

  4. Hold space for what comes into my mind

  5. Write 1 word in my journal for reflection throughout the day

Reduce Technology, Increase Energy

Aim to keep distractions, cords, and phones out of your nook. Rather, include:

  • A tiny speaker for nature recordings or soft soundscapes

  • A meditation app or timer that you only use in this area

  • A handy basket to stash objects in when not in use

Instead of another to-do list, this place is an escape from stimulation.

Foster It As Your Own

So you don't have a Pinterest-perfect meditation nook. You can still meet yourself there, just the way you are. Allow it to change as your needs, moods, and seasons do.

On certain days, you might sit quietly and light a candle. On other days, you could just breathe, journal, or stretch.

Allow this to be a gentle landing spot for you.
